Multivitamins 101: What They Are and How They Can Help

A daily multivitamin is a simple way to help fill the nutrient gaps in your diet, and the right formula can make it even easier.

What is a multivitamin?

A multivitamin combines many vitamins and minerals in one daily supplement. Think of it as a backup for the days when meals aren't perfect. Formulas vary a lot from brand to brand, so the ingredients and amounts on the label really matter.

A multivitamin can't replace a balanced diet. Food also gives you fiber and other nutrients that a supplement can't. (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements)

How can a multivitamin help?

  • Fills nutrient gaps. It can help cover what you may miss when your diet is limited, such as when you eat little, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, or have a small appetite.
  • Supports key B vitamins. Adults over 50 may need extra vitamin B12 from supplements or fortified foods.
  • Supports women who may become pregnant. Folic acid, at 400 mcg a day, is recommended for anyone who could become pregnant.
  • May support memory as we age. In a large study of adults 60 and older, those taking a daily multivitamin did better on memory tests than those taking a placebo. (Mass General Brigham)

Multivitamins are not a cure-all. Research hasn't shown they prevent heart disease or cancer, so healthy habits still matter most.

Meet our Coenzymated Multis

At Organik MD, we made two once-daily formulas built around methylated B vitamins, which are B vitamins in their active forms. Both are free of dairy, gluten, soy and other common allergens, and both are non-GMO, vegetarian and iron-free.

Advanced Women's Multi | Coenzymated Designed for women's daily needs, with methylcobalamin (B12), methylated folate and benfotiamine, plus antioxidant support from grape seed extract, quercetin, lycopene and alpha lipoic acid, and lutein and zeaxanthin.

Advanced Men's Multi | Coenzymated Designed for men's daily needs, with methylated B12, folate and B6, plus zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants, and a prostate and urinary blend of saw palmetto, pumpkin seed and lycopene.

Tips for taking a multivitamin

  • Take it daily, ideally with a meal.
  • Check the label so you don't double up on nutrients from other supplements.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider first if you take medications, have a medical condition, or are pregnant or nursing.
